Privacy Policy: last update 19 August 2026
SmartRunning respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how SmartRunning BV collects and uses personal data when you visit our website, pre-register for launch updates, connect a running device, use the SmartRunning app or contact us.
Who we are
SmartRunning is operated by SmartRunning BV, a company incorporated in Belgium. Registered office: Kardinaal Mercierplein 2, B-2800 Mechelen. Belgium. For privacy questions, contact: privacy@smartrunning.coach.
Personal data we collect
- Contact and account data, such as your name, email address, login/account information and communication preferences.
- Training and connected-device data, such as distance, running duration, heart rate and other running information made available through devices or services you choose to connect.
- Training-profile and journey data, such as your race goal, training phase, completed or missed sessions, plan status and race outcome where this is collected or generated by SmartRunning.
- Information you provide directly, including readiness or training feedback, support messages, survey responses and other information you choose to submit.
- Marketing data, such as your email marketing consent, acquisition source and engagement with SmartRunning emails.
- Technical and usage data, such as IP address, device/browser information, cookie choices, app events, crash/performance data and website/app usage information, depending on your settings and consent choices.
- Payment and subscription information needed to manage your subscription. If you purchase a SmartRunning subscription through the Apple App Store or Google Play, payment processing is handled by Apple or Google. SmartRunning receives information needed to manage your subscription, such as subscription status and transaction information, but does not receive or store your full payment-card details.
Where the data comes from
We collect personal data directly from you, automatically when you use the SmartRunning website or app, and from running devices or services that you choose to connect to SmartRunning. We may also receive information from service providers that support functions such as subscription management, customer support, analytics and app operation.
How we use personal data and our legal basis
We process personal data:
- to create and manage your account and provide SmartRunning’s training functionality, where processing is necessary to provide our service.
- to send marketing communications and use non-essential analytics where you have given consent.
- to maintain the security, reliability and proper operation of SmartRunning where this is necessary for our legitimate interests.
- to meet legal, accounting and regulatory obligations where required by law.
Children and minimum age
SmartRunning is intended for users aged 18 years and older. We do not knowingly provide SmartRunning accounts to, or collect personal data through the SmartRunning service from, anyone under 18. If we become aware that a person under 18 has created an account, we may close the account and delete the associated personal data, subject to any legal retention requirements.
Heart-rate and training data
SmartRunning currently uses training data including heart rate and changes in heart rate over time as inputs to its training and readiness assessments. Because heart-rate data can reveal information about a person’s physiological state, SmartRunning treats this data as health data for GDPR purposes.
We use this data only to provide and personalize SmartRunning’s training functionality and related guidance. We do not use it to diagnose medical conditions or provide medical treatment.
Automated processing and personalization
SmartRunning uses automated processing to analyze training information and personalize your training experience, including when generating or adapting training guidance.
SmartRunning does not use solely automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects for you.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal data.
We may share personal data with carefully selected service providers that help us operate SmartRunning, including:
- cloud hosting and app-infrastructure providers.
- connected-device and running-data integration providers.
- subscription and payment platforms.
- customer support and lifecycle-communication providers.
- email communication providers.
- analytics, performance and crash-reporting providers.
- AI service providers where AI is used to support or generate coaching feedback.
These providers may process personal data only for the purposes for which they are engaged and subject to appropriate data-protection safeguards.
International data transfers
Because SmartRunning may operate internationally, your data may be processed outside your country. Some of the service providers we use may process personal data outside the European Economic Area. Where this happens, SmartRunning uses the safeguards required under applicable data-protection law, such as an adequacy decision or approved contractual safeguards. You can contact us at privacy@smartrunning.coach for more information about the safeguards applying to your data.
Marketing communications
We send marketing emails only where we have the required permission or another applicable legal basis. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in the email or by contacting privacy@smartrunning.coach. If you object to direct marketing, we will stop using your personal data for that purpose.
Service messages that are necessary to provide or manage SmartRunning are separate from optional marketing messages.
AI-supported coaching feedback
SmartRunning uses an external AI service to help generate personalized explanations or coaching feedback from selected SmartRunning training data. AI-supported feedback is part of the training experience and is not medical advice.
Cookies, analytics and similar technologies
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies. Non-essential analytics and marketing technologies are used only after the required consent. You can manage or withdraw your choices through the website consent controls. See the SmartRunning Cookie Policy for details.
How long do we keep data
We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purpose for which it is collected. Account and training information is generally retained while your account is active and afterwards only where needed for legal, security or dispute-resolution purposes. Marketing information is retained until you withdraw your consent or unsubscribe, although we may retain limited information needed to respect that choice. Transaction records may be retained for the periods required by applicable law.
Your rights
Under applicable data-protection law, including the GDPR, you may have the right to access your personal data, correct inaccurate data, request erasure, restrict processing, object to processing, receive data in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
You also have the right to object at any time to the use of your personal data for direct marketing, including related profiling.
To exercise your rights, contact privacy@smartrunning.coach . We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
You may also lodge a complaint with the Belgian Data Protection Authority or another competent supervisory authority.
Security
We use technical and organizational measures designed to protect personal data against accidental or unlawful loss, access, alteration or disclosure. Access to personal data is limited according to role and business need.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when SmartRunning, our data practices or legal requirements change. We will publish the updated version and its effective date. Where required, we will provide additional notice or request new consent before using personal data for a materially different purpose.
